The terms of "Hegemony" refers to the leadership, dominance or great influence that one entity or group of people has over others.  Modern usage of "hegemony" often refer to a group in a society having power over others within that society. For instance, the wealthy class might be said to have hegemony over the poor because of its ability to use its money to influence many aspects of society and government. In many democracies, the wealthy class can be said to have hegemony over the middle class and the poor. Wealthy individuals can contribute the most money to the campaigns of certain political candidates, political parties or causes. 3rd tutorial questions

1. Examine class representations from American television's beginnings to today sticoms, reality shows, police drama and daytime talk shows.

The representation of Americans in television has been a major concern in mainstream American culture. The representation of Americans that portrayed in television misconstrued image of what Americans represent. Results shows that 89% of TV population is white and left 6% of them were black.Since local news media may be the primary source of learning for many adults, it plays a vital part in policy debates regarding civil rights, the public’s general knowledge about minority communities, and a broader and more comprehensive worldview. Therefore, ownership in media suggests that American-Africans should be well present in media, especially reality shows and daytime talk shows.

2.What is the American dream and how has it been portrayed on television.Who has it excluded and why ?

American dream is known as  a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility achieved through hard work. The idea of American dream proclaims that 'All men are created equal'. The American Dream is almost anything, anything that anyone sets there mind & heart to. However, television & movies portray the American Dream specifically, or so it seems, for an American to have a loving-nuclear family, great job, somewhat known, rich, & even throws in a little puppy into the picture. Many people believed that American dream that portrayed in television is real ,fabulous lifestyle with loving family although is unachievable and unattainable image of ideal family.

3.How do media representations of class reflect the larger social system and social equality?

4.How is the working class portrayed when it has been represented?

Working class is known as a range of culture created by working class people. In American popular culture, working-class people are often portrayed as losers.Working-class women in television sitcoms are often portrayed as physically out of control – fat, loud, overly sexual, and dressed in loud and inappropriate clothing.  It’s even worse for the men.  They might not look any more “refined” than the women, but at least most female working-class characters are competent.Too often, though, “working class” is a derogatory term. In a country where everyone is supposed to have an equal opportunity to get ahead, calling someone working class can feel like a put down.  The American dream isn’t achieving great wealth; it’s becoming part of the middle class. Because of our faith in the possibility of upward mobility through effort and talent, people who remain in the working class are often judged as failures.

5.What are the struggles faced in trying to get a show about class people on TV ?

6.How are race and gender intertwined with class on TV ?

1. Explain how the influences of mass media extends beyond what we know to include how we relate to the social world.

The influence of mass media which also called as mass effects, it affect how people and audiences think and behave.Mass media used agenda setting, the usage of making what people should think about, but not what to think.Media would not cover the truth and the nature of news and messages especially political issues. They tried to shape up people's mind to make people feel and see on what they wish.

2.Fill in the elements of the 'media and the social world'model below and briefly and explain how they relate to each other. ( blank version of the model )
I have no idea on this.

Basically, media also known as medium. Nowadays, we uses medium such as television, radio, magazines and newspaper to gain information and entertain ourselves in daily life.Social world involves social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Myspace and etc.People able to know each other through social networking world no matter how far the distance was .It also known as social tools to make us connect emotionally but not physically.

3.How does the presence of media affect your life ? How would it be different without the mass media ?

Media plays an important role in our daily lives. We could gather informations, knowledge and news through the usage of media. However, we will spend much more time on medias such as televisions, internet and mobile phone rather than communicate and interact with our families and friends.  It will be huge different without the presence of mass media. We could not quickly know and get the information in the first second after news happened. Life would be dull without internet for entertainment and socialization with people throughout the world.

4.Overall, do you think the growing presence of mass media in our lives is a positive or negative development? why ?

I feel that the growing presence of mass media in our lives is a positive development. Mass media  such as television, newspapers, and radio carry messages quickly to large, scattered, and heterogeneous audiences.Nowadays, people can read free news through online newspapers, online magazines and socialization network such as youtube, facebook and more.In any discussion of mass media, we must include advertising.Advertising purchase time and space in print and electronic media to promote products and services and also create awareness to the public on certain issues.

I feel that the presence of television has changed family life. Nowadays, people used to spend more time on mass media especially on television.Family members will gathered and watch television channels, drama and series together, such as the badminton final match Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan. Most of them would just gathered and supported our Malaysia player. This could strengthen the relationship between one another. The development of internet brings the different impact. This is because the internet is more to an individual activity. You not able to share the same computer with your family members at the same time. The spread of internet makes people less sociable and interactive.
